Caher Consultancy specializes in the practical applications of Positive Psychology, teaching executive groups how best to deal with stress on both an individual and organisational level.

About Caher Consultancy

Caher Consultancy was established in 2011 by Michael O’Brien <title/rank/quals?>. Led by Michael, the consultancy provides executive leadership development and team-building for a wide range of Irish and international corporate clients, concentrating on the application of Positive Organisational Behaviour techniques. These are defined as: “the study and application of positively oriented human resource strengths and psychological capacities that can be measured, developed, and effectively managed for performance improvement in today’s workplace.”

Michael uses his prior experience gained in training Special Forces units of the Irish Army, coupled with extensive academic study and research (Diploma and MSc in applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology), to design and implement bespoke three and four day executive training, leadership and team-building courses either onsite or in a number of luxury offsite venues in Ireland or abroad.

About MO’B

Michael served as a professional army officer in the Irish Army for twenty years, doing tours of duty in several different European countries, Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia. In the last years of his service he worked as part of a European Battlegroup, raising and training the first Special Forces (ISTAR) unit within the Irish Army.
Military training concentrates on resilience and stress management, and since leaving the army (with the rank of Commandant [Major]), Michael has used this experience, coupled with academic study in the fields of Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology, to develop three and four day programs enhancing wellness and wellbeing in the workplace. These programs are designed to manage and reduce stress in the workplace, lowering executive burnout rates and improving stress management on an organisational level.

Positive Psychology –

In the science of Positive Psychology, the emphasis is on evidence-based research and outcomes.
Positive Organisational Behaviour (POB) is the study of how positive psychological resources and positivity contribute to organisational health.
POB can be defined as “the study and application of positively oriented human resource strengths and psychological capacities that can be measured, developed, and effectively managed for performance improvement in today’s workplace”.
Psychological capital, or PsyCap, is defined as “an individual’s positive psychological state of development” and is characterised by the mnemonic HERO: Hope Efficacy Resilience Optimism.

Lambay style courses and outward bound courses for team-building and professional development.

The subject of resilience in positive psychology deals with the ability to cope with whatever life throws at you. Some people can be knocked down by life and return as a stronger person than ever before. These people are called resilient.
A resilient person works through challenges by using personal resources, strengths and other positive capacities of psychological capital such as hope, optimism and self-efficacy. Overcoming a crisis by resiliency is often described as “bouncing back” to a normal state of functioning. Being resilient is also positively associated with happiness.
Ability to bounce back from the “BIG ONE”.
Overcoming background.
Steering through the everyday.
Finding Meaning through “Reaching Out”.

Other services

Stress Management
Stress is a natural occurring phenomenon and is part and pace of modern life. How we choose to deal with the inevitable stresses of day to day living has a massive impact on our health, both physical and mental. Michael offers training in stress management, teaching tangible, practical interventions to assist with stress management.

Human rights advocacy
Michael is an experienced and committed human Rights Advocate, regularly lecturing at the United Nations Training School Ireland on resilience in Human Rights.
“I have lectured in the Swiss training school training United Nations observers and I was contracted by the Swiss government to consult as a subject matter expert on the Sustained Humanitarian Presence Initiative in Juba, South Sudan. The project is a Swiss/Irish funded project aimed at improving NGO’s capability to maintain a presence in the field. I was involved in the workshop design and subject matter delivery in Dec2014. I delivered lectures on Personal Awareness, Stress Management and team dynamics. I taught tangible, scientifically proven Positive Psychology interventions to the twenty five students for their own use, and for use within their parent organisations. The course had students from twenty different NGO’s (including GOAL), and twelve different nationalities. An end-of-course questionnaire rated the Positive Psychology content to be the favourite aspect of the course.”

Schools and youth groups

The same positive psychology tenets that are beneficial to corporate management are also applicable to school students and youth groups. Caher Consultancy has developed a number of programs designed specifically to help improve the wellbeing and happiness of secondary school students. These programs provide training for youth groups and other organisations focusing on developing positive routines and developing strategies to help youths navigate the day to day challenges of growing up in an increasingly fast paced world, and encourage the growth of a positive mindset.

Risk management
In tandem with the Positive Psychology applications Caher Consultancy also provides Risk Management and Risk Management training for a number of high profile clients. Security assessments, briefings and training are conducted to the highest professional level. We guarantee absolute discretion and the highest standards.

Leadership and Executive Teambuilding

In close consultation with existing company HR departments we develop Leadership and Executive Teambuilding courses. Recently we had the pleasure of developing a three day course for some top staff at a growing Irish company. The staff were the company’s senior executives drawn from a number of departments, of varying experience and length of service. In an increasingly competitive market, the client requested a training programme that would be both challenging and enjoyable, educational and of benefit to both the staff attending on a personal level, and the company in operational terms.
Caher Consultancy delivered the tailor-made training package over three days, focussing on individual development, team development and group dynamics. The team assembled to deliver the training were all specialist professional instructors. The training was based on Positive Psychology tenets and incorporated a variety of indoor lectures as well as some outdoor activities. With a focus on experiential learning, the participants were able to implement the management techniques being taught immediately, under the expert guidance of the instructors, to complete a number of practical tasks. From start to finish, the participants found the training thoroughly rewarding, and subsequent feedback verified that participants were able to implement the techniques taught when they returned to the workplace. The client company have recommended our services subsequently.

Wellness programs

The HR Department in a government department decided to develop a wellness program for all staff. Caher Consultancy focussed immediately on the areas of greatest concern for the HR department: tackling the stress levels amongst staff, and helping develop their resilience. We also identified a number of other areas where some improvements could be made. We delivered stress management training and resilience building lectures on-site as well as advising on a number of other initiatives. Using Positive Psychology interventions we helped develop a program aimed at developing the Psychological Capital within the department, aimed at enhancing employee wellness. The program was a huge success, was oversubscribed, and following the feedback from the initial on-site training, further dates have had to be arranged to accommodate client interest.

Coaching

In 2015 the Swiss government contracted Caher to instruct on a bi-governmental project in South Sudan, teaching planning techniques as well as stress management and resilience building. The program was successfully delivered to over ten different aid agencies including, Save the Children, Tearfund and Mercy Corps.

The process of coaching is one of the most satisfying and rewarding pursuits for me as a coach and for the client. Testimonials
Thank you to you and the team. I have had an amazing experience on the island.
The training you provided was intense, engaging but most importantly fun at the same time.
I was taken out of my comfort zone a few times, but really loved the buzz and working as a team with colleagues you may only just to say hi to normally.
This experience has already had a positive influence on my personal and work life.
Take-care and thanks again to you and the team for your guidance, support and patience at times.
It’s a really good course, well balanced between work, personal mental content and non-work content and it’s obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the course. While all of the course presenters and facilitators were very good, your delivery, patience, people-control and presentation stood out. In an army setting I would guess I would really like to have you on my side.
I really appreciated your words of praise. It’s interesting hearing it from somebody externally, it’s not something I have found our company very good at recognising or commending.
I think it was a great experience for all and a lot of positives to take from the weekend. We refer back to it and use parts on a continuous basis – even last week in China I was asking someone to slow down their explanation to me – using techniques you taught!
Best course I have ever done – transformational! I am using loads of what we have learnt.
I surely loved this adventure and really enjoyed your lessons !
Just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you and your team for an amazing weekend. It was great to get away from the norm and I for one have decided that I need to join the army (but I think being 40 now my age might be against me)!!!!
Your guys really were fantastic and it was very interesting to hear how you plan your exercises and how we can then use that same system in the business world to great effect. Can you tell them a big thank you from me.
Thanks for all the tools you gave us last week, it was a brilliant workshop.
Your training has set the tone perfectly for our wellness program, it made a great start.
Thank you for your visit to our country. We will use all the good things we have learned to improve conditions here.
